You blink, and the baby you once held in your arms is now here for one final summer before she’s off to college. Where does the time go? It all feels so cliché, but that doesn’t make the shock any easier.
Jennifer was feeling that shock when she called this past summer. Her family hadn’t had a family portrait session since her kindergartner was just a baby. We had just finished both of her daughters’ Senior Portraits a couple of months earlier, and she was feeling that, although she loved the portraits of her daughters, she needed some portraits of her family together. Her eldest was here for just the summer before she went off to college many states away, so it was a feeling of ‘do it now or regret it forever’.
Laguna Beach Locations for Family Photoshoots
We met at Aliso Beach, a great location for family portraits, and hiked along the shore until we got to the little coves and some interesting rock formations. It was an easy summer evening, with a lovely sea breeze that played beautifully with the girls long hair.
As we had photographed her daughters we had gotten to know Jennifer and her son well. Her son was very loving and cuddly with his sisters and his mom, but at the start of the photoshoot he told me, ‘no’, he didn’t want to do it because he was much more interested in the ants he had found. I told him I completely understood – ants are fun – and so I made him a deal. He could continue to play with the ants while I got his sisters and mom all ready on the pose. Then I would say, “OK – I need that man of the photo” and he would need to jump-in for a few photos and save the day with his handsomeness…plus there was a lollipop at the end if he helped me out. After that, he was Mr. Helpful – jumping in right on-time without a fuss, and even offering to help carry equipment! He was awesome.
Spontaneous, candid family portraits
Taking true candid family portraits take time. As a photographer you have to wait for the moment to happen, as forcing it to happen can look fake and unnatural. With these kids, however, there wasn’t much to wait for – they played and interacted with each other with such ease and love. As we were wrapping up, the girls decided to take their little brother up on the ledge of the large rock formation at the end of the beach. Nirzhar scrabbled up there with them to help and take a few last photos of the sunset, capturing some of our favorite photos of the session.
