When I was about 12 years old, my mom decided it was time to burst our suburban bubble and open our eyes to citizenship and compassion. She brought my sister and I to the Boulder Colorado food bank to help put together bags to give out to needy families. In honesty, I was scared to death – I never talked to a homeless person before and they were so different, dirty and some had mental disorders like schizophrenia that seriously terrified me. But, I also learned a really important lesson that day – people, no matter what they looked like, their background or even their mental capacity, were people and needed compassion and love just like our family. I was so moved by this that I continued to go to the food bank and help every Wednesday morning – even taking off from school to do it – first with my Mom, then once I could drive, on my own. When Nirzhar and I married, he would give me day old bread from the bakery he worked at and I would make sandwiches for the many people and families that would come in. It was just a little 2 room house, and very often it was just me and a social worker, but that little bit of time helped so much – not just the people I served, but me as well.
I was thinking of those many Wednesdays and how it had shaped my awareness and compassion and decided it was time for me to do what my mother had done for me: open my eyes to how I can help the community. I went to the Second Harvest Food Bank website and found a great program for children – Lizzy’s Corner. I called to sign-up the kids, Nirzhar and I, but it would be April before we could go! However, I did find a Senior Center that is supported by the Second Harvest Food Bank that needs some help with serving holiday meals that we’re planning on going to. But, Nirzhar and I wanted to do something now that could help OC families, and we decided we would do a little Facebook campaign to help bring awareness and funds to this great organization.
